Submit your work to Response

If you’d like to see your work in the next issue of Response: The Journal of Popular Culture and American Culture, we invite you to submit. We are currently accepting papers, projects, and reviews for our Spring 2020 issue. All drafts and non-traditional academic project proposals are due by January 10, 2020.

This journal is an open-access, peer-reviewed publication; we make every effort to tailor and develop content that takes advantage of the possibilities of digital publication. As such, we solicit work that sometimes goes outside the “traditional” print-based form of scholarship.

We are soliciting various kinds of scholarship and criticism representing our organization’s more than forty Areas. We are interested in:

  • Traditional peer-reviewed articles (5000-8000 words)

  • A “Round Table” discussion on a specific subject, including perspectives from three or more scholars (2500-4000 words); If you are interested in this, please contact us for suggestions on how to facilitate, moderate, and produce this discussion

  • Publication / production / event / exhibit reviews (1500-3000 words)

  • An extended editorial or review about the state of your field and/or notable recent development in your area – a “State of the Union” for your area. (3000-4500 words)

  • An in-depth interview with a notable figure in your field (2000-3500 words, or a podcast/recording of 10-20 minutes)

  • Scholarship Based in New Media – Do you have a dynamic narrated photo essay or video project? A ‘TED talk’-type lecture or presentation that is suitable for MAPACA? Let us know if you think that you can showcase your scholarship and research in new media platforms.

Submission Instructions

We will accept completed submissions written according to any commonly accepted style guidelines (MLA, Chicago, APA, etc.) However, if your article is accepted for publication, we will expect you to furnish a draft of your article using Chicago/endnote citation format.

If you have material you would like our editorial team to consider, you may send either a completed article/review or a brief proposal/description of your project to publications [at] mapaca [dot] net.
